Since the early twentieth century, geothermal energy has been used to produce electricity.
At late as 2002, traditional monitoring instruments were still being used by the Caithness Energy Corporation of California and Nevada steam fields. But the frequent need for maintenance and calibration was challenging steam turbine performance. What's more, scale deposits and the cooling of dissolved solids in the geothermal steam were resulting in sensor plugging problems.
In 2003, Caithness presented Sierra with their dilemma. Sierra recommended their Innov-Mass Model 241
